It is with a heavy heart that Race Director Wayne Riddin, together with the entire aQuellé Midmar Mile family, announces the passing of Ann Hanson. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time.

The outpouring of messages across social media and WhatsApp groups speaks volumes about the love and admiration so many had for Ann. She was a truly special person who inspired countless individuals—especially within the swimming community.

As one of the founding members of the Coelacanths Swimming Club, alongside Joyce and Derek Fyfe, Ann played a vital role in fostering a community grounded in passion, encouragement, and integrity. She was not only a cherished part of the aQuellé Midmar Mile family, but also a beacon of support and inspiration throughout the South African swimming scene.

The creation of the “71 and Over” and “81 and Over” categories at the Midmar Mile was a direct result of the continued participation and encouragement from Ann and Derek. What started with their commitment has evolved into some of the most competitive and special age groups within the event—showing that age is no barrier to excellence and joy in swimming.

Ann was known for always helping others. One swimming friend, Ann Gray recalled:

“Ann Hanson was our ‘second’ on the rubber ducky when Barbara Pearse and I did a Robben Island crossing in June 2002. We always saw her at SA Masters and Midmar Mile.”

Jo Vreenegoor, a fellow Coelacanths member, shared this touching memory:

“I joined the Coelacanths Swimming Club in 2004 after being stopped in my local pool and asked if I’d like to join them as I looked quite good… the rest is history. Joyce, Derek, and Ann took me under their wings. They inspired me to be better! Their integrity, kind nature, loving spirit, and just totally awesome personalities rubbed off on me.”

With love and immense gratitude, we say goodbye to Ann. Thank you for all you gave to the Midmar Mile family, to your club, and to swimmers across South Africa. Your presence will be sorely missed, but your legacy will live on—in every seeding event supported by your club, in every swimmer you uplifted, and in the spirit of community you helped build.

Though no longer with us, we believe you are now one of the special shooting stars shining brightly above us.

Rest in peace, Ann.
